Volunteer San Diego’s August 2008 newsletter featured our own Todd Neuman as Super Hero of the Month. Todd was honored at a Padres Game on July 30th where he was awarded a special certificate and a congratulatory message was displayed on the scoreboard. The feature article said: “This month we would like to recognize Todd Neuman, a volunteer with Loma Portal Klassic Kids. Klassic Kids provides counseling, childcare, and community services to children and their families. Todd has been volunteering tirelessly for the last 10 years at Loma Portal Klassic Kids with little thanks and he has been a role model to others. He participates in all the school activities and Klassic Kids events; as well as returns to the school for evening events and field trips. Each month, Todd volunteers a total of 136 hours, dividing his time working in the classroom and working with children. Candace Snell states, "Todd brings positive disability awareness to the classroom by being a positive role model for students, and by being understanding, giving guidance and supportive to others. We are very proud of our volunteer, Todd."

ORCO Construction Supply, the largest independent building supplier for professional contractors on the West Coast, is teaming up with Harmonium, a San Diego-based, non-profit agency that offers social service programs for children, youth and families, to rebuild a handicap ramp for the Hage Klassic Kids Child Care Center. Cliff Beyer, Volunteer & Staff Services Manager for Harmonium, says the ramp in its current condition “provides a rather bumpy ride for wheelchairs due to years of heavy use and for safety reasons really needs to be totally rebuilt. Since we are a non-profit organization that relies strictly on public and private sources, we are grateful to ORCO for lending us a much needed hand on this project.” The Community Service Project will involve ORCO volunteers working on a building-type project that benefit one of the communities it has served over its 50 years. “We’re working with community officials, leaders and organizations to develop projects that will have a positive, lasting impact for our communities.”

ORCO Construction Supply Teams with Harmonium to Rebuild Handicap Ramp for Childcare Facility (August 2007)

Harmonium's Klassic Kids Program Administrator, Heidi Sorour, inspired the programs at our Klassic Kids sites to participate in SOLES FOR SOULS. This was a donation campaign that collected gently used shoes of all sizes to be sent to the people of Haiti who lost so much after the disastrous earthquake in January.

Gage Elementary School Klassic Kids has started their own play restaurant, "Sky Bucks".
