EPICENTRE, A SAN DIEGO REGIONAL TEEN CENTER, CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF CREATING MUSIC, ARTS & LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH
11/3/09 - In the early 1990's, San Diego teens told community leaders they had "nothing to do and nowhere to go." Through the generous support of the community, government and local business the Epicentre opened in the Mira Mesa community on January 1, 1999.
Several hundred youth, families and dignitaries are expected to gather at the Epicentre, a San Diego Regional Teen Center, on Friday, November 13, 2009 to celebrate 10 years of leadership, community service and enrichment opportunities for youth and families in Mira Mesa and surrounding communities.
For youth in Mira Mesa and surrounding communities, the Epicentre has been there providing an energized and creative gathering place. Youth enrichment programs are built on technology, music, art and diverse cultures offering a blend of education, business, entrepreneurship, community service, recreation and socialization opportunities - in a safe and fun environment where teens and adults support each other and the community. Epicentre is a unique facility that includes a multipurpose room and all-age performance venue with a full digital recording studio, a multimedia computer lab and art studio.
From July 2008 through June 2009, Epicentre served over 19,000 youth through the after school program, enrichment classes, music venue and the recording studio. More than 100 concerts and private parties were held in our all-age music venue and Epicentre regularly hosts local community groups for their meetings and activities. Big name bands that have performed at Epicentre include: Fall Out Boy, Maroon 5, Brand New, Owl City, Daphne Loves Derby, Shenanigans, Explosion in the Sky, Autolux, The Locusts and many more.
"The Backstage Pass Music Program was like finding the light at the end the tunnel. So many youth try to "make it big" but in reality have no clue on what to do, besides play at birthday parties or other events and hope to draw a fan base. We were in a similar boat, performing and working on a CD but not sure of just what to do after we had our CD done. Now we have a game plan and feel we are well on our way to getting past the obstacles one hurdle at a time." Stephen and Jason Sluyter, The Go Project
The Epicentre Journey: Celebrating 10 Years of Youth Service will include an Open House from 4:00 - 6:30pm with presentations from local dignitaries, alumni, present staff, and youth participants as well as youth music, dance and art demonstrations. A concert will conclude the evening beginning at 7:00pm with three local bands: The Colourist, Goodnight Caulfield & This City District.
Epicentre, a program of Harmonium, Inc., will conduct an online auction from November 2-22, 2009 to support our continued efforts to expand our current programming areas to include a variety of leadership opportunities, workforce development, community involvement, while still focusing on the needs and interests of youth today. http://epicentre.cmarket.com
