November 13, 2007 – East County Counseling, Alternatives to Smoking
Harmonium East County Counseling has been off to a great start this year continuing with some old contracts and beginning some new ones. One new program initiated this year in collaboration with the Grossmont Union High School District is entitled Alternatives to Smoking (A.T.S.). A.T.S. is a one week, eight hour group for students who have received a suspension at their school due to possession of cigarettes. More
May 24, 2007 – High School Staff Training
Harmonium provided an all day workshop to high school district staff in El Cajon regarding working effectively with high school youth. The staff received training on how to use effective communication techniques working with at risk adolescents, and how to create an effective learning environment within their classrooms. After the training, teachers reported feeling more empowered to work with difficult students due to skills gained from the training. More
January 2007 – City Arts Academy
One of our kindergarteners at City Arts is homeless and his family has been living in their car (mom, dad, and three children all under the age of 6). Their car recently broke down and mom lost her job. The family was fortunate to find shelter at the Saint Vincent DePaul’s downtown center. To our surprise, the center told the family that their son would have to attend their downtown shelter school and could no longer attend City Arts…it was their policy. This little kindergartener was excelling at City Arts both academically and socially; and the school was the only constant in his young life. More
April 11, 2006 – East County Counseling, Juvenile Diversion
In January a young girl was arrested for fighting on her high school campus. The police referred her to Harmonium's East County Juvenile Diversion Program. Upon assessment with our juvenile diversion counselor, she had poor attendance at school, her grades were below C average, and she admitted to having anger management problems. More
July 31, 2005 – The Go Project
“A few months ago the San Diego Regional Teen Center more commonly referred to as the Epicentre offered a unique class. My brother and I were fortunate enough to have our application accepted and our progress in the music arena has finally begun to take off. For a few years now we have been hoping to record a CD and last November after meeting with Ross Ambers, we started using the Epicentre recording studio however, if we had not been involved with the Backstage Pass Music Program class, the CD and our direction as a group would not be at the level it is right now.” More
January 27, 2005 – Perkins Elementary “6 to 6” Program
Mrs. Lopez, a single parent, has raised five wonderful children whose ages range from five years old to twelve years old. Four of the five children are currently enrolled in the “6 to 6” program at Perkins Elementary. Mrs. Lopez has gone through some hard times. She has not been able to maintain a steady job due to the lack of job opportunities that exist within the San Diego area. She is currently getting help from welfare. The money that she does make goes to her rent, bills and accessories that her children need. She said, “Sometimes it’s hard for me to get everything paid. I don’t know what I would do if the “6 to 6” program wasn’t available to me. I would have to sacrifice bills and not pay them for the simple fact that I would have to pay for childcare so that someone could take care of my kids.” More
